A repotting consultation is a focused session designed to help you determine whether a plant actually needs a new container, and if so, what kind of pot, soil mix, and timing will serve it best. Many plants suffer more from unnecessary or poorly executed repotting than from staying in a slightly cramped container, so the first part of any consultation involves examining root growth, checking drainage, and looking at recent leaf or stem behavior before making a recommendation.

During the session, a consultant looks at the specific species you're working with, since a succulent, a tropical foliage plant, and an orchid all have different root structures and different tolerances for disturbance. Factors like current pot material, root-bound signs visible through drainage holes, soil compaction, and any signs of rot or pest activity all factor into the advice given. The goal is to match the plant's actual needs with a practical plan rather than following a generic schedule.

Soil composition is another central topic. Different plants require different ratios of organic matter, drainage material, and aeration, and using the wrong mix can lead to root rot or poor water retention regardless of how well the repotting itself is executed. A consultation typically includes guidance on which soil components suit your particular plant and growing conditions, whether that means a heavier mix for moisture-loving species or a fast-draining blend for plants prone to root issues.

Pot selection is discussed as well, covering material choices such as terracotta, ceramic, or plastic, and how each affects moisture retention and root temperature. Size is addressed carefully, since going too large too fast can leave soil wet for extended periods and increase the risk of root rot, while a pot that's too small will restrict growth and require more frequent repotting down the line.

Timing advice is also part of the consultation, since repotting during active growth periods tends to be less stressful for most plants than doing so during dormancy or right after a bloom. If a plant shows signs of stress, disease, or pest infestation, the consultation may include steps for addressing those issues either before or during the repotting process, since moving a struggling plant into fresh soil without resolving underlying problems rarely helps on its own.

By the end of a consultation, you should have a clear picture of whether repotting is necessary right now, what materials and soil to use if it is, and how to handle the process in a way that minimizes stress on the plant. This kind of tailored assessment is particularly useful for less common or more sensitive species where general online advice doesn't always apply directly to your specific growing environment.
